Today is the first day of the next 3 months...

Today begins a new chapter in my work-life. I will now work four 10-hour days every week, enjoying Fridays off, for the next 3 months. I am one of four participants in this 3-month trial program for my department. And I have somewhat mixed feelings.

My hours will be/are 7:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. This will force a bit of an adjustment in my daily schedule. Before today, I would wake up around six a.m., get dressed/shower, piddle, pack my lunch and breakfast, and get to work anywhere between 7:10-7:30. Around 3:30, the itch to go home would commence, and I usually would leave work around 3:45 or 4 p.m. Admittedly, this was a very nice schedule. I still had plenty of time to go to the post office, deposit checks in the bank, make it to the grocery before the 5 o'clock onslaught, and in the winter, enjoy several minutes of daylight. I could also stay an hour or so later in order to leave early on Fridays.

Leaving work at 5:30 will be a stretch, but I am weighing it against the bliss of being off every Friday. Crafts, projects, workout classes, and extended weekend trips now have a day of their own! I have no doubt this extra free day will be an enormous asset; but Thursday afternoons I will probably be wiped OUT.

What would you have done?

  1. I would have done it too! I am glad that you will be at work the whole time I am now. When Fridays roll around, I'll be sad. :(

  2. Me too! You are going to love Fridays off. How fun it will be to go to the Y when only a handful of people are there! Oh how I wish.. :)

  3. You are going to love it! When I worked for Chris at Highland, I used to have Fridays off, and it was fabulous. (Think about how it changes your vacation time--if you have 10 vaca days, it means you have an "extra" 2 days off of work in addition to two weeks!)

  4. well, kind of. i still have vacation time in increments of 8 hrs. so if i take off 2 days, that is 20 hrs vacation time instead of 16, so i'll either have to take another half day of vacation or make up the time. vacation is the trickiest part of the whole deal, IMO.

i definitely would have done that...it's bliss to have a weekday off to get those things done that always close when you work "normal" hours. you can get so much more accomplished if you go at the day with a weekday mindset that you're going to get such & such done that day. enjoy!

  6. Yeah you did good. I work Mon-Thurs and it is great. I make all of my Dr. or whatever appointments on Fridays. One Friday recently I did a road trip to Nashville. You'll enjoy that day, I promise.

  7. i'm late posting on this but i also have the 7-530 schedule with fridays off and i heart my fridays!!! it's amazing how quickly they become busy, but usually with things i WANT to be doing. lunch with friends or grandma, volunteer, shop, sleep late!, explore, grocery, MD appointments, hair done... things i no longer have to take off work for so the PTO thing evens out really. and my job lets me work fridays if i want to make up for time off. it's nice to have a choice! let me know how it works out! we should be friends and hang out on fridays!
